Michael Shaughnessy is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University and a towering figure in mathematics education. With over 40 years of dedication to the field, he is best known for his leadership and extensive research into how students reason with data and chance.

Leadership at NCTM

Shaughnessy served as the President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) from 2010 to 2012. During his tenure and throughout his involvement with the Board of Directors, he advocated for integrated mathematics curricula and the transition from "outmoded" course sequences to pathways that better prepare 21st-century students.
