Dewey Gottlieb

Dewey Gottlieb is a prominent leader in mathematics education and currently serves as the President-elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Based in Honolulu, Hawaii, his career spans over three decades of leadership in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Professional Leadership

  • NCTM & ASSM: Beyond his role as NCTM President-elect (effective October 2025), he served on the NCTM Board of Directors (2020–2023) and is a past president of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM).
  • State Coordination: He provided leadership and support for mathematics education in the Hawaii Department of Education, serving as the Educational Specialist for Mathematics, the NAEP State Coordinator, and the Mathematics Innovation program specialist.
  • EdTech Engagement: In June 2025, he joined Desmos Studio as the K-16 Engagement Manager.

Key Contributions & Honors

  • Advocacy for Equity: A strong proponent of ethnomathematics, Gottlieb helped establish the world’s first graduate-level program in the field at the University of Hawaii.
  • Curriculum Innovation: He is a contributor to the NCTM writing team for High School Mathematics Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant.
  • Distinguished Awards: He was the first teacher in Hawaii to earn National Board Certification in secondary mathematics and has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) and the Milken Educator Award.
